Arkansas Chapters of Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated Serve the Public during the 2017 MEGA KINGFEST – Arkansas’ Official Statewide Commemoration of the King Holiday Celebration hosted by the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission

The observance of the congressionally legislated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States holiday that marks the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is observed on the third Monday of January each year.  On this day each year, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission hosts its signature, annual event known as the MEGA KINGFEST – Arkansas’ Official Statewide King Holiday Celebration.  On Monday, January 16, 2017, the Arkansas MLK, Jr. Commission held this community outreach project at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, AR.

Members of Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated from Philander Smith College (PSC) and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) along with alumni/graduate members supported the Arkansas MLK, Jr. Commission through volunteerism during the 2017 MEGA KINGFEST by way of distributing hygiene kits, serving food, interacting with the youth, organizing donated goods, and just about anything that was asked of them to do.

“The youth are the future leaders, I am a future [leader] myself, going into the next phase of our world.  You have to be the change you want to see in this world,” said Bro. Matthew Jenkins, who was excited to volunteer and give back.

“I am excited to see both our collegiate members and our alumni/graduate members give back during this King Holiday program through service.  The Men of Iota here in Arkansas have experienced momentous accomplishments and achievements through strategic relationships in the community, whether it is with governmental entities, nonprofits, area businesses, or other social service organizations similar to ours.”  As a proud supporter of the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, we are truly thankful for the opportunity to serve, and through this service, we as a fraternity are able to answer one of Dr. King’s famous quotes, which addresses ‘Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’,” said Bro. Walter Washington, President of Beta Chi Omega (Arkansas Alumni/Graduate) Chapter of Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated.

Members of the Arkansas Chapters of Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated plan to continue its works throughout various regions of the state of Arkansas in and around Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Magnolia, Conway, Fayetteville, and surrounding communities – thereby keeping true to the fraternity’s motto, which is “Building A Tradition, Not Resting Upon One®.”  For more information about Iota Phi Theta® Fraternity, Incorporated, please visit www.iotaphitheta.org.
